There’s something about a foil reveal that makes you want to make just one more card. That moment when a plain printed design turns shiny? It never gets old.
If you’re looking for toner reactive foils in the UK, welcome to Once Upon A Foil, my own foil range here at Foiled You Once. From a little metallic detail to a colourful glitter-effect finish, there’s plenty of room to make your projects feel like you.
Ready to choose your next foil colour? Explore my Once Upon A Foil toner reactive foil collection for A4 sheets and rolls in metallic, glitter and holographic finishes. If you're just getting started, the £7.99 Once Upon A Foil Starter Kit is a simple way to try five colours before choosing a full roll.

What is toner reactive foil?
Toner reactive foil adds a decorative finish to toner-printed artwork using a suitable heated foiling machine or compatible laminator. In this method, the foil transfers onto the toner areas of your design, leaving the surrounding paper uncovered.
You start with a compatible laser print or pre-printed toner design, cover it with foil, process it using the recommended setup and peel away the carrier film. The result can be anything from a shiny greeting to an eye-catching invitation.
Check that you’re buying foil intended for toner foiling. Hot-stamping foil and pressure-activated foil belong to different systems and should not be assumed interchangeable.
A4 foil sheets or foil rolls: which should you choose?
The right format depends on how much you’re making and how you like to work. Check each listing for the sizes currently offered in your chosen colour.
| Format | Why choose it? |
|---|---|
| A4 sheet | A manageable starting point for a small project or trying a colour. |
| 3m roll | Useful for several projects while building a varied colour collection. |
| 5m roll | A practical option when you return to the same finish regularly. |
| Selected 10m rolls | More length in a favourite finish for repeated designs and batches. |
Cut a piece to cover the artwork you want to foil, with a small margin around it. You don’t need to cover the whole page when your design only fills a small area.
Choose a finish to suit your project
Love a classic look? Explore metallic finishes for elegant lettering and simple details. Prefer something playful? Look at glitter-effect and colour-shifting finishes that catch the light as you move them.
For a colourful starting point, Magic Carpet rainbow glitter toner foil brings a multicoloured sparkle to cards, prints and stationery. Browse the collection to compare it with other finishes and see current availability.
See toner foil on a finished project
One of my favourite ways to choose a finish is to see it on a real make. This finished ticket uses Wishing Star rainbow laser toner reactive foil, showing how the reflective colour shifts across the printed design.

For another romantic holographic finish, have a look at True Love’s Kiss pink holographic foil, which I've also been testing on foiled tickets and decorative designs.

What can you make with toner foil?
- Greeting cards: foil a birthday message, Christmas greeting or simple line design.
- Wedding invitations: highlight names, dates or decorative details.
- Small business stationery: add foil to thank-you cards, business cards or packaging inserts.
- Personalised prints: make a favourite quote or name the centre of attention.
- Stickers: use suitable laser-printable sticker material that is also compatible with your heated foiling setup.
Whatever you’re making, start with a small test. Paper, toner, artwork and machine settings all affect the finish, so a test strip is a useful first step before a whole batch.
New to toner foiling? Try the £7.99 Starter Kit
Want to try a few finishes before choosing a full roll? Do you need a laser printer?
For the standard toner-print method, yes: the design needs toner. An ordinary inkjet print does not provide the toner layer this process uses. You can also begin with a suitable pre-printed toner design if you don’t own a laser printer.
A compatible laminator can work, but results vary between machines. Check your machine’s instructions, supported materials and suitability for toner foiling before buying supplies.
